New leadership programme for GP’s launched

London South Bank University (LSBU), Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and Modality Partnership have launched the first ‘new to partnership’ GP leadership programme to provide primary care leaders with the knowledge and skills they need lead at executive level.

The ‘Leading Primary Care programme covers all essential aspects of primary care management and leadership for effective general practice and Primary Care Network delivery. The programme is the first of its kind and aimed at primary care partners, leaders and clinical directors, including thousands of GPs across the country. It will start working with primary care leaders in April 2021 for over 10 months with each leadership group.

An early pilot of the programme was run in early 2021 and led to excellent feedback from GPs, which provides an indication about the capacity of 'Leading primary care' to strengthen leadership in general practices and Primary Care Networks.

Becky Malby, Professor in Health Systems Innovation at LSBU, said, “Primary care is vital to our health service, and leaders in general practice and primary care have had far too little access to leadership and management development. We have designed this programme with our colleagues at Modality and RCGP to provide essential knowledge and skills for healthcare leaders. We believe it will lead to development of senior leaders who are able to lead robust primary care teams and innovate across primary care systems. ”

Dr Michael Mulholland, Vice Chair of Professional Development of the RCGP said, “The College recognises the need to build confidence and support GPs who want to move into partnership roles. This programme will make a valuable contribution towards that aim. ”

Mr Vincent Sai, CEO of Modality Partnership said, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to share our direct experience accumulated over the past decade in embracing new models of care and at-scale working”.
