All older residents of eligible care homes across England have now been offered a Covid-19 vaccine, NHS England has announced.
The achievement was described by Prime Minister Boris Johnson as “a crucial milestone” and is expected to be confirmed by official figures later today. He also added that vaccines are the “route out of the pandemic”.
“We said we would prioritise and protect care home residents, and that is exactly what we have done,” Mr Johnson concluded.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, care homes across the country have been significantly disrupted by the pandemic. Potential Covid-19 outbreaks have rendered it impossible for relatives to visit and the continued success of the vaccination programme brings some much-needed positive news.
Commenting the news, Social Care Minister Helen Whately told BBC Radio 4 Today’s Programme: "Today marks a crucial milestone in our ongoing race to vaccinate the most vulnerable against this deadly disease. Any care home that hasn't been contacted, just let me know and I will personally follow up”.
So far, more than nine million people received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine.
